An 83-year-old Korean War veteran, Bert Wiebe, from Abbotsford who had his scooter stolen on Friday is back in the saddle thanks to a local company’s donation.
“I’d like to thank them very gratefully,” said Bert Wiebe. “I’m overwhelmed that the response came so quick.”
On Monday Abbotsford police said they had received five scooter offers in about two hours after they released information about the theft
The $5,000 scooter was Wiebe’s main mode of transportation, and his mobility was severely hampered without it.
“I didn’t think anybody would be as low as that. It’s my only way of getting around,” said Wiebe.
On Tuesday, Chris Kehler, president of Coast Bathing Solutions, offered Wiebe a $6,000 scooter that the company had in its possession Continue reading “Kehler helps Abbotsford Veteran Get New Scooter”
Normally, Larry Kehler and his wife, Cheryl, would be slicing pizzas and pouring beers for friends and tourists in their restaurant a couple of blocks from the shores of the scenic resort town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
“We’d just be running our bar and partying,” said Kehler, who goes by the moniker “Señor Fox.”

From time to time, when meeting new people and an introduction is made, the first question that will pop up is “from which Kehler family are you?” After having answered their question of who my father and grandfather is, oft times, the next question asked is “any relation to ______? ”
That blank will sometimes be Jake from the Husky Station. Followed by, the age old question of “Is it true that Jake and Edgar (Edgar’s Diner) were brothers? Jake would always deny it, while Edgar claimed they were brothers!” Since both brothers have passed on, for the record, they are brothers! From there the conversation usually turns to the great food Edgar had, back in the day — and his famous Veal or, as Edgar pronounced it — ‘wheel’ Cutlettes.
Edgar’s wife, Helen, has continued to market Edgar’s Veal Cutlettes. If you are passing through Steinbach, pick up a box of frozen Veal Cutlettes , complete with sauce, at Main Bread & Butter, 253 Main Street, Steinbach, MB.
Taste the Kehler flavour, as you once knew it!
Editor’s Note: The story that Glen shares below, commemorates the 100th anniversary year of the experience John S Kehler had. Thanks Glen!
My father, John Schultz Kehler, was not a farmer, however he stayed on the Ebenfeld farm until the younger brothers took over. He traveled beyond the family farm to find work and went harvesting in Saskatchewan, where he had many Schultz uncles, aunts and cousins. From there, John went threshing in Alberta and ended up in Lethbridge, AB.
One day, as he was walking down the street he met two uniformed soldiers, who abruptly stop him and questioned why he was not in uniform. His reply was that being a Mennonite, he was exempt from the army Continue reading “John S Kehler and the Canadian Armed Forces, 1915”
